Is it possible for an ordinary person to be a hero? Patricia Overy is certainly proof positive. Sharon Singleton, a co-worker of Mrs. Overy, didn’t quite know what she would do without her job as an accountant. At 60 years old, searching for a new job the can be a daunting proposition. That’s when Patricia Overy stepped up and volunteered to sacrifice her job so that Singleton could keep hers.

As a laid off former employee myself I’m not sure how I would have ever repaid the kindness that Patricia Overy showed to her co-worker. This is an unexpected act of kindness from one human to another that defies the common wisdom of our me-first society and needs to be celebrated. Not only celebrated, but replicated.
